I got a Hulu subscription so I could watch The Handmaid’s Tale, and saw that This Is Us was available there. A few people have recommended it to me so I watched the first episode of Season 1. Honestly, I didn’t “enjoy” it because it struck me as overly sentimental and emotionally manipulative (no offense to fans of the show). Nevertheless, the emotional manipulation totally worked and I was bawling my eyes out by the end of it.
As I try to work out if it’s worth committing to this series, I’d like to know if the rest of the episodes are similar in style to this first one?

yes, similar. all the episodes go back and forth between past and present. As they go further in, hot issues like addiction and mental health issues are tackled. many of the episodes are pretty emotional.
