I have been collecting boxes for Sefarim but I wonder if crates are more durable

Boxes are fine as long as you don't get ones that are too big and don't try to overstuff them.

I always used liquor-store boxes for books -- they are smaller and therefore easier to carry.

If this is for moving the movers once suggested this to us and we did it in two moves. It worked wonderfully. Just wrap stacks of seforim in shrink wrap. Each stack should be light enough for you to wrap. The movers then put all the wrapped seforim stacks on a hand truck and we didn't even have to "unpack" it. Just removed the shrink wrap one stack at a time as we put it on the book shelves.

When we moved our movers told us to wrap 8-10 sferim together all sides with Saran Wrap & tie it with rope for easy lifting.
