I just want to see what the average number of friends that children might have to spend time with on Shabbos in the neighborhood. Our neighborhood is quite small and maybe we would move to give our kids an opportunity for more "friend" options but I wonder, how many friends does a kid need? Is a bigger neighborhood really better?

We live Oot but have a wonderful Shabbat community. We sometimes have 15 β€œextra” kids at our house in the afternoon.

Each child has about 4-8 friends they regularly see on shabbos.

My kids are not social butterflies and prefer to play with one or two good friends instead of a huge group.

We moved to a new neighborhood about 6 months ago and B"H there are loads of girls in DD's age range here. Some of them are friendly with each other so DD can get together with 3-4 of them at once...but some are not, for whatever reason, and always telling DD to come over, and she gets conflicted about dividing up her time and not hurting anyone's feelings....

It's normal for some kids to be more social and do fine in a group, and some to be more quiet and prefer 1 on 1. So knowing what your child is like is a big factor. Also, if you move to a neighborhood that has, say, 1 child your child's age...your child might not hit it off with that child, for some reason. So if there are more kids, there are more options.

It totally depends on the kid's personality and the weather.
