It would be the news organization that uncovered the truth. It stands to reason.

Quote:
The powerful original photograph, taken at the scene of a border detention by Getty Images photographer John Moore, became one of the iconic images in the flurry of media coverage about the separation of families by the Trump administration.

Dozens of newspapers and magazines around the globe published the picture, swelling the tide of outrage that pushed Trump to back down Wednesday and say families would no longer be separated.

“My daughter has become a symbol of the ... separation of children at the U.S. border. She may have even touched President Trump’s heart,” Denis Valera told Reuters in a telephone interview.

Valera said the little girl and her mother, Sandra Sanchez, have been detained together in the Texas border town of McAllen, where Sanchez has applied for asylum, and they were not separated after being detained near the border.

Honduran deputy foreign minister Nelly Jerez confirmed Valera’s version of events.

Varela said he was awestruck and pained when he first saw the photo of his crying daughter on TV. “Seeing what was happening to her in that moment breaks anyone’s heart,” he said.

The photo was used on a Facebook fundraiser that drew more than $17 million dollars in donations from close to half a million people for the Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services (RAICES), a Texas-based nonprofit that provides legal defense services to immigrants and refugees.

The Trump administration’s “zero-tolerance” immigration policy had led to the separation of 2,342 children from their parents at the U.S.-Mexico border between May 5 and June 9.

Video footage of separated children sitting in cages, an audiotape of wailing children and Moore’s photo had sparked worldwide anger over Trump’s immigration policies.

Sanchez and her daughter had left Puerto Cortes, a major Honduran port north of the capital city, Tegucigalpa, without telling Valera or the couple’s three other children, he said.

He said he imagined that Sanchez left with the little girl for the United States, where she has family, in search of better economic opportunities.

“If they are deported, that is OK as long as they do not leave the child without her mother,” Valera said. “I am waiting to see what happens with them.”

I think 6oW did a good job breaking down what the media got right and wrong in this instance.

But do you think any of the outrage on display is a little misplaced here? I mean, we're supposed to overlook the fact that the first lady wore a coat screaming "I REALLY DON'T CARE" but melt down over a picture?

The fact that children are being separated from is not a contrived media conspiracy -- it was announced by the government itself! So I'm not seeing how anyone can call "fake news" and make the story go away.

Because the media is not careful to accurately report the news, no one trusts it. We know that 2300 kids are in federal custody but we also know that some came without parents or with parents who were involved in criminal activity and are now where they are the safest. The kids who need advocates are those who were taken unfairly. If the news stirs up a frenzy then an opposing news source puts out the fire and causes more confusion. The result is frustration and less support for the cause.

Well, "no one" if you only include anonymous posters on imamother. I don't think anyone on this site is so credulous to accept every media report as the absolute truth. We all know "trust but verify, " wait till more information comes in, see if the same information is being reported by multiple sources etc.

I know that media errors are usually promptly reported and corrected. Of course those retraction themselves are used as evidence of how false the media is!

We also know that Trump won largely by stirring up fake controversies and leading "lock her up" chants. To this day the majority of members are convinced beyond a shadow of a doubt that Hillary is guilty of major (undefined) crimes and belongs in prison. and his every declaration is eagerly echoed across the right wing media. No zealous search for truth there! So I'm not quite sure what the lesson is for the rest of us. I mean, the same people so overwrought about media "lies," easily confirmed, easily rectified, don't seem too concerned about the tsunami of lies coming from the government.

Jeanette,

The truth matters. .

The truth matters only when it’s the Democrats who are caught not being completely accurate or twisting details of an event. Trump and his media do it multiple times on a daily basis, yet no one cares.
The truth doesn’t matter, it only matters when it doesn’t jive with YOUR truth.

The truth matter then also.

Please cite the multiple times Trump and his media lied today. Today is as good as any day. And what do you mean by his media?

I agree that Trump is expert at playing the media but he seems to have a following of real believers who get upset if anyone contradicts him so lies and distortions are selling on both sides of the media leaving the average person to either blindly follow one side or figure that all media is a mix of lies and truths but we won't really trust it.
