The doctor wants to put my child on Lupron to stop puberty because she is very short.

These articles make me very nervous.

No experience.

Do *you* care about your daughter being very short? Or this this something the MD is pushing on you. Very short isn't a medical condition.

Discuss your concerns with your daughter's endo. Is the endo recommending lupron in conjunction with GH?

Totally agree with jade. I'm not sure what lupron is specifically, but I assume it is a hormone. Hormones are incredibly powerful and can wreak havoc on a body.

I once heard Rabbi P. Krohn say that a Jewish parent consulted with a top specialist about growth hormones for his short son. When asked if the doctor herself would give it to her son, she answered like this:

"In my community, yes, I would have to. Because everyone I know cares about looks, cars, houses, etc. In order for my child to have a chance at any self esteem, he would have to do the hormones if he were short. But you are Jews. You value more than the body. You are so lucky. If I were you, I would NOT give my child the hormones, because he will live a fulfulling life regardless of height. His worth is not diminished."

Lupron supresses getting your period. Like for example, someone I know is getting Lupron shots to supress her period because she's going for chemotherapy and they don't want her to get her period.

Who is recommending the Lupron? The endocrinologist? I've heard that once you get your period you stop growing...and some teens, when they skip their period, will grow during that month.

It's also part of IVF protocol for many people.

My first concern at doc was the idea of stopping puberty.
The doc dismissed it; all the kids that go on lupron get thier period back!
Then I came home and read these articles and im also nervous if it cant cause terrible mood swings or whatever. Gosh im so nervous.

I found this: https://www.hormonesmatter.com.....peak/

What I noticed was most of the patients who suffered from ill effects of the drug used it for the long term. It sounds like the treatment course will be short for your daughter - (and of course you can stop any time- and let nature take its course).

(I asked about who wanted you dd to start this protocol. Happy to read MD has suggested it based on your daughters fears, not his).

Would the endo be willing to prescribe GH without lupron? GH alone has minimal side effects.

4'9" is short. It's not just about caring about looks, or about self-esteem. It's that general activities of daily living are somewhat more difficult at that height.

I would recommend contacting the MAGIC Foundation www.magicfoundation.org for advice about lupron.

I find that story very hard to believe unless the kid did not really need it .that is the most horrible thing to say if you know nothing about growth hormones or growth hormone deficiency it affects way more then the child's height it affects the growth of major organs and mussel mass it makes me so upset when I see people say it all about getting taller yes that is a big part of it but do you understand what is like to have a kid so much smaller and not growing its a huge thing my daughter looked like a baby she was so much smaller she was not able to go on rides and the lady was like sorry your to little for this as she watched younger kids go on. drs don't just prescribe gh its a big process and expensive. now my daughter is catching up to her pairs she is much healthier not getting sick as much she looks her age dont badmouth somthing if you dont even know what it is.

one of my dd has the implant and we are not doing shots. we are doing gh with it shes had it for over a year already and doing fine on it . she is growing but the bigger thing is her bones wont close yet while we wait for her to grow in our case she started hitting puberty at an early age (not unnormally early) and it was going to stunt her growth we are just trying to get her to her full potential.

Every medication has side effects even over the counter medications. Even so, if I had been short I would have wanted to give my chance to grow more. 4'9" is extremely short. I think 4'8 and under is considered midget, why subject your daughter to that when there are alternatives. Self esteem is just as important as physical health. Unless she is very happy being short and would be ok knowing she could only attain a 4'9" height, have you discussed this with her? How old is she?

I missed this part. In that case if she's 13 and understands, let her do it.

It doesn't work as well when they're very close to puberty from what I've heard. I think they're supposed to start this earlier around age 9 for it to have an effect. Ask the doctor how much of an effect this will have since she's 13. Has she showed other signs of development?
