amother wrote: | I live in Europe too and not sure if that is accurate. Housing and food costs the same or more in Europe, depending where you live. (although I think kosher items cost a lot more in Europe, other items, like fruit and veg, may cost less.) Tuition might be less, and health insurance is almost certainly a lot cheaper, if its not free. But taxes are higher. If you send your kid to seminary or yeshiva in Israel, you get charged the same as the americans. |
I live in Germany. Taxes are high but school and kindergarten isn't very expensive, food besides the stuff you buy in a kosher store is very cheap. Housing depends where you live obviously but it's definitely doable. And there's loads of benefits for families. Just now they started a new program where families who want to buy a house or apartment get a few thousand euros per child etc. Health insurance is cheap and medicine is free for kids and 5 euros for adults. So 150 thousand euros is a lot for a normal family. For a Jewish family it's still good. I honestly know very very few people who make that much. Most people make 50 thousand (after taxes) and they live normal lives. My father made 40 thousand and we could afford a couple vacations a year. I guess a family with only 40 k would be on food stamps in the US

there is often a correlation - but wealth strictly speaking is what you have, not what you earn.

Comfortably upper middle class is still far from wealthy.

I have a category of relatives that are wealthy. They have names on buildings. Theoretically they dont have to work for the next couple of generations (my aunt would be appalled if they actually did not work). One of my cousins owns an art gallery, another works for a non profit a third invests in restaurants. There is 0 pressure to have a career that can pay all your bills.
I have lots and lots of relatives that are comfortable. Spacious homes, lots of travel, kids in private school, summer homes. They have nice lives but its nowhere near the the other category.

I like the measure of wealth as how long can you live a comfortable lifestyle of you can no longer work, g-d forbid. This is why investment and assets call be more (or at least equally as) important than a high paying job.

You are so lucky you can put your feet into less $100 shoes
Some people need shoes above 100 otherwise they are torture chambers/

Wealthy is living in multi (multi) million dollar home, often having second home, luxury travel, household staff. Typically wealthy people are big charitable donors in their community and beyond. High end wardrobes, etc etx
I live in a very wealthy neighborhood so I have a high threshold for wealth.
Many people might be considered wealthy but I think they are just comfortable.
People can be rich on paper, but I think of wealth as more of a lifestyle as well. |
Flaunting money doesn't one wealthy make. It doesn't have to do with the lifestyle one is leading, but how much money they have/are earning.

You're missing my point.
To me wealth is when you have it AND live it. Not flaunt it. I never said show off.

interesting way of looking at things.
So a person with 20M in the bank, but lives in a small apartment in a less desirable neighborhood isn't wealthy 'to you'.
I'd call that frugal-wealthy.

I'm not missing your point. I find it strange to only consider someone wealthy if they lead a certain lifestyle with it.

We make a lot more then 50 thousand and we still struggle, especially now our kids have hit seminary/yeshiva age. We do have a few kids kah though. If we just had 2 or 3 kids, (and were not sending to OOT yeshivas,) we would be doing well.
Germany sounds amazing benefits wise. (you forgot to mention university is free there!) Alas I don't live in such a socialist utopia but still a million miles better then the US. I think food is also cheaper in Germany then in most other european countries.

There's a specific company I like that has good quality leather shoes that'll last years. I can't stand those ballet flats that are like cardboard under your feet...
And I don't own 30 pairs, I own like 3. |
I need good quality leather slip ons bec my feet get sick if they cant breathe so if u know one that costs 100 but lasts years, do you mind telling us(me) the company and type of shoe??

So just wondering...
To compare Warren Buffet to a flamboyant billionaire who-shall-not-be-named, Buffet lives in his original 1950's house, drives a regular car, eats hamburgers from McDonald's, and his wife shops in thrift shops. As compared to of course - Trump Tower... which is the opposite (whoops, it slipped out).
Who do you consider wealthier? I'm sure Buffet has a higher net worth..

From Israel...so NAOT.
More like sandals than shoes...
I've tried "european stores". They don't really cater to wide feet like mine, I've found these are the only shoes that actually don't hurt my feet. I've bought expensive shoes in places that were from europe but eventually ended up giving me blisters and stuff...
The Crocs store is good too, I just hate the look of cutesy flats and detest the feeling of feeling the ground underneath you, but they do have some nice shoes..I own a pair from there.

I don't like to sound too 'goody-goody' but I really think there is great truth in the mishna from Avot

I've always translated that as 'rich' not 'wealthy' I guess for me those words have different meanings. Rich is aspirational. Wealthy just is.
