I live in BP, and twice a week we have to move our garbage to the curb for pickup.

For years DH suspected that we have way too much garbage for the amount of people we are. He says someone must be putting their garbage into our cans.

This Shabbos afternoon I was sitting on my porch and I see a neighbor who carries on Shabbos, carrying out of his house a huge black trash bag and looking straight at me and noticing Im on the porch. So, he walks a few houses away and puts his huge full garbage bag in a Shul garbage can.

Im putting 2 and 2 together and Im almost sure, had I not been on the porch that huge bag would have been put in our cans.

I assume this person doesnt like shlepping heavy cans to the curb twice a week so he throws his garbage in other peoples cans so they'll do the heavy shlepping. I could see from where I was sitting that his cans were empty.

What can we do?

Can you move your cans anywhere else where he won't have access?
Any way to confront him about it?

Theres only one place big enough for garbage cans. On front side of house.

DH would never confront him and I def wouldnt.

We see our neighbor putting bags into our cans all the time. (We have camera)

Several requests for them to stop went ignored.
There isn’t anything else I can do really...

You can lock your trashcans. Those durned animals keep getting into your trash, so you needed a lock.

We had this problem. Our neighbors put their OPEN trash bags in our cans. Everything spilled & it's a huge job to clean it up. Talking to them went to deaf ears. We made a fence with a lock in the designated trash can area so only we have access to it.

Where I live I have seen signs by the garbage cans warning that it's gezel for anyone to use them.
The lock sounds excellent!

Why do people want to use the neighbor's trashcans? Because their own trashcan is already full?
Disposables, if not put together properly takes a lot of space. Most people are too lazy to do that after a meal.

I love it too.

Any ideas, other than checking through ALL the bags (and theres a lot of bags, its a 3 family house) and finding an item with their name?

DH wouldnt do it, but Id call them to come and get it.

Before we locked up our trash cans, whenever I would see my neighbors putting their garbage in our cans I would take it out place it at their doorstep.

Start putting bright red tags on your bags so the neighbor will feel uncomfortable putting his there!
Hey maybe I can do that too Twisted Evil

Let's get creative! You could start using a unique trash bag. Like purple or green or something. (Tee hee...)

I honestly don't think that such a type of person would get put off by another color trash bag. I guess if the lady is sitting there, that's a different story. The idea is good though.

They wouldn't care...but then you have an easy "siman" to identify and return the interloping trash bag.

Trash bag woes are a real source of angst. Not to be taken lightly.
When it happens to me, I try to daven that it should be a good Kapparah.
It doesn't always do it for me though.
It's a constant battle of: is it worth it to say something or just take it in.
