Just as a btw, my pediatrician and a specialist both told me it can take up to 3 weeks to start seeing a difference on reflux meds. It's not instant help. My baby had it sooo bad I thought I was hitting the roof. Bh after 2 1/2 weeks I started seeing a difference.

Very frustrating to keep going back, but seems to me like a very thorough doctor. a rarity in this day & age when doctors barely look at you.

It's funny, but as much as Google is not a doctor, it does give information. Past experience also gives info. Dr. Google says that her symptoms are classic reflux. Dr. Imamother also says so. My son had reflux when he was an infant, and she presents with similar symptoms. So when real Dr. So-and-So says so, it's not a shock to anyone. I don't think it was prejudiced by probability, I think it made sense--as he concluded when he evaluated her the second time.

(Now, Dr. Imamother also asked if it's possible that she is tongue-tied, and that is causing reflux. Real Dr. So-and-So poo-pooed it, since he doesn't know what posterior tongue tie is. Midwife Sara Dvorkes, who has experience with these things, said otherwise-although she didn't want to clip it. Real Dr. So-and-So also laughed me off when I said I think my baby might have mild torticollis. Well, guess what? Other people also see it, and notice that her head is slightly flatter on one side from the impact.)

You actually just made my point. Reflux is the most common. Child not getting better on meds. Time to take another look. That’s medicine.

Many physicians don’t deal with posterior tounge ties.

I wish you well. You started this thread by asking ‘is the normal’. Yes.

Your doctor shouldn’t be laughing at you.

I'm very happy with Dr. Wahba, on P & Bedford. The office is very well run, there is usually no wait time, and he is an excellent doctor.

I actually went there as a kid... my mother was happy with his office because of the lack of wait time, but I didn't like him so much. I was actually much more comfortable when my mother switched us to this very same pediatrician -- and had been happy with him as my internist, as well. First issue I had was when I started bringing my kids there.

One thing I'll say is that my kids have gotten sick a lot more than my siblings and I did when we were younger, so it feels like I'm running back and forth from the doctor every other second.

If he thought that was the case, he DEFINITELY could have told me that over the phone (he actually could have also told me that at the first visit, but I didn't think to ask). Dr. Imamother said one week.

As it happens, we kept my baby on the twice a day dose, and after 3 weeks, we did start seeing somewhat of a difference. But that's not what the doctor said at all.

I guess that's why I've stuck with him. I did feel like he was pretty thorough. But now I'm just getting fed up with running back and forth. I have a lot of demands on my time nowadays and it's hard to keep going for things that I don't feel are strictly necessary. Also, the copays can add up!

Not after one week... the protocol in this situation is to change the dosage. He wasn't going to do anything else but that.

I know they don't. I guess I shouldn't have even mentioned it to him.

He didn't really laugh at me, exactly, but chalked my concerns up to anxiety because of the issues my son had.

Does he have Sunday and evening hours? I've heard good things about him, but my SIL told me he mainly has morning and early afternoon hours...

We used to go to him as kids but switched because the hours were not good. I don't know what it's like now.

You know his protocols?

Do you think he should offer different standard of care packages based on how busy mom is?

You could mention it - but using it as evidence here demonstrating your point of how much this doctor sucks, isn’t fair.

He's a great dr. but has awful hours. You need to make well check ups months in advance and the latest apt is 4:00. I used him for my oldest child and I have since switched to Dr Beityakov. He is a fantastic dr. Plus, he has short wait times and great hours.

If every site on the Internet says that this is what they do, and the doctor even admits that he can't do anything else for reflux in a baby this age except change the dosage, is it not reasonable to conclude that that's the protocol?

Not at all, just think that he makes me run into the office for everything, when not everything needs to be seen. Other people have told me that their pediatricians tell them when to come in and when not to. My pediatrician's default is "come in" for everything.

By the way, I don't think he's a terrible doctor. As I said, he's my PCP. I just can't be running to him every other second. And as I said, not only am I running, but the wait time is atrocious each time, and they charge me another copay.

slateblue, try Dr.Bet Yaakov. He's everything you're asking for except being by the low Es and Ave P. Everyone I know who uses him is very very happy.

Ok. You have every right to change doctors if you aren’t happy with the way your doctor runs his practice. That said - again, you started with a slew of complaints asking ‘is this normal’ - yes. There is nothing problematic with your doctor. Despite that - you are seeking a different practice for your child. That’s okay.

(Your doctor’s protocol is not to change a dosage over the phone).

This is the kind of thing I'm used to with some other doctors:

Me: calls OB-GYN because I think I have a yeast infection at 6 weeks pregnant.
Doctor: calls in prescription at pharmacy, tells me to come in to check for UTI if the symptoms don't go away.

Me: calls dermatologist because he told me the lump on my leg is benign, but it hurts, and I want to check if it's dangerous.
Doctor: it's not dangerous, you can have it removed if it hurts.

How would PCP have reacted had I gone to him?
1st situation- come to our office to check for UTI (even though I'm itchy and there's no burning while urinating). If it's not, you need to go to the gynecologist to check for a yeast infection.
2nd situation- come in to my office so I can evaluate.

I don't know a single doctor where this is not the case.
