I thought it was a Yiddish word meaning daven with Kavana.

No one else I asked heard of the word "Shep-tcha".

My mother was Czech born (near Munkatch I think).

I doubt my mother made up the word.

I think it means to whisper.

I.e. you should hear the words u daven (not just move your lips) but not say them aloud in order to desturb the oylam.

Thanks all! I just spoke to someone on the phone and she said its a Yiddish word and also said it means whispering, which I find a little odd considering my mother wasnt a quiet davener.

If you go on Google translate and put in the word "whisper", translate to Czech, and listen to the pronunciation, it sounds like "shep-ta". So that might be where it came from.

Your mother likely meant you should say the words audibly but not loudly.

It's a word used for a loud (annoying) whisper. Like the sound of the word sheptcha.
