On the tip of my tongue, I think started with an M, senator perhaps, who was in the presidential race (could be 70s, 80s) and then it was revealed he'd been treated for depression at one time.
Today it would be so non-PC to consider this any type of reason not to have the nuclear codes, no?

It wasn't a Presidential candidate. I believe it was Tom Eagleton who ran as VP on the McGovern ticket in 1972.
I don't think Mondale who ran against Reagan was treated for depression but I could be wrong.

I believe you're referring to Thomas Eagleton, a Senator from Missourri, who was the 1972 VP nominee under George McGovern for a few weeks until he was forced to withdraw when his treatment for depression (including several hospitalizations) was revealed.

I think you're right. DH asked if it could have been McGovern & when I looked him up & saw Eagleton it sounded right.
