On another thread a poster said out of 10,500 NYC firefighters only 44 were women. I am surprised there are that many! I have lived in Brooklyn for over 20 years and have never seen one!

Have you? Where do you live and how common is it in your neighborhood?

I'm confused. If there are only 44 out of 10,000 it's obviously not going to be common anywhere. Do you think all 44 work at the same station?

I try to avoid places with large fires, so I doubt I would see any.

Obviously they don't!

I was just curious if anyone has seen a female firefighter. I have never. And I have kids who are obsessed with fire trucks. I have stopped and waved at every truck passing us by for the last 10 years. No women ever!

Are they actual firefighters or do they work for the FDNY? Some may be just paramedics and EMTs for the FDNY.

I don't know. That's a good point. Not sure how to research that.

I remember reading an article a number of years ago about the first female firefighter in NYC. I was surprised that the other poster said there were 44 now. I thought that number was quite high! Makes sense if most of those women are not actual firefighters.

Thanks!

So google was my friend.

Out of 311 firefighters to graduate this year in NYC...5 were women bringing up the total to.....72 on the force. Women make up .5%.

So they are out there as actual firefighters. So my original question still stands:

Have you ever seen a female firefighter?

I know one who followed in her father's footsteps. She serves with him as a full firefighter.

44 out of 10,500 = 0.4% of NYC firefighters. That;s not much at all.
And how many firefighters have you seen?
Also, they might not work in Brooklyn. Maybe they work in Manhattan or Queens.

And why is it so surprising you have never seen these particular 44 people in a city of 8.5 million people?

Shocker of all shockers here: Brooklyn is not the whole world or the center of the world. Is is not even the biggest borough in New York. So you do the math. Smile

I think there’s one in my CT town. She may be a volunteer though. I’m not sure.

No, but you wouldn’t necessarily be able to ID the gender of a firefighter in full turnout gear. Those coats aren’t exactly form fitting, for one thing, and for another, gender assignments for dress, hair and grooming are very fluid these days. I’ve come across men whose ponytails and eye makeup I envy, and women who were really hard to identify as such.

I have seen pictures of, but not met in person, HS-age girls who are junior volunteer firefighters. This is not in NYC but in very small communities with volunteer fire services. They go to fire scenes and provide support like pulling hoses but don’t enter burning structures because they’re under 18 years old.
