Does a grill pan just make the food look better- or does it affect the taste (or anything else)?

effects the taste for sure. gives grill marks and I even make delicious paninis in the grill pan (I use another pot to smash the sandwich down).

A grill pan will give you a char to your meat. If you have a super high burner, the effect is much better. You get the fat sizzling up. I use a 18,000 BTU on high.
It is worth it to invest in a heavy grill press rather than using a pot to weight your food down.

We stopped using our grill once we bought a grill pan. There wasn't that much difference in taste to justify the bother.
