What is out there that is recommended and affordable (under $50) and has no wifi?

Check ebay. Nintendo dsi xl is very good. Mario discs are fun.

Thanks will research. Do you find it's worth buying a used Nintendo (no purchase protection) vs an off-brand product from the local toy store?

A game n go is about $40 and has many games similar or that same as gameboy, plus other games.

I've heard about this. Can it be bought online? Do you have first hand experience with this: did it break after a few weeks of usage or is it a (somewhat) quality product?

Toys4u sells them, they have a website maybe you can find it. It's great quality & doesnt break so fast.

100%. You can’t compare. My son got a used one a few months ago for pennies and it’s in perfect condition.
