Why only in New York/NJ

Why is it that only in New York & Lakewood (that I have observed) do people people care so much about their looks & care even more about how others look??? In Israel, London, Stamdord Hill, Montreal..... everyone dresses how they like & no one cares or comments!! Am I the only one that thinks it's a New York thing?? And why is it so??

Such circles exist everywhere. But only in NY do I see people who are FRUM FRUM, and so enmeshed with not only physical appearance, but Hollywoody one. I cannot even BUY a size zero in a regular shop in my country, if it isn't a short or teen shop. Says it all.

I'm sure such circles exist everywhere. But as per my observation, only in New York are people so into their looks.

I live in monsey NY and totally do not care that much. Neither do my friends.

I assume because NY bills itself as the fashion capital of the world. It wouldn't surprise me if in LA they are even more looks-conscious than in NY, because of all the entertainment people who live and work there, but the frum community of LA is much smaller than the one in NY and thus less visible and less influential elsewhere.

I was raised in Pittsburgh and I cared about my looks. Didn't have the money to wear brand names or anything but being put together and stylish is important to me

I didn't say "everyone" in New York cares about their looks. Of course there are those who dont. But its definitely more in New York than any other large Jewish population.

I've heard that's an LA thing aswell. And Antwerp, London... Basically everywhere people live... There will always be judgmental or superficial people. Some places breed them more than others. But it's definitely everywhere

Flowerpower, I didnt say anything is wrong with it. I just made an observation, that's it.
For example, chassidish women wearing black tights. In New York everyone makes a big deal about it & has comments galore. In Europe/Isreal no one gives a hoot about it.

Well your list is wrong. Stamford Hill are just as in to it as their chassidish counterparts in the US.
