Ok, so what is venting on imamother going to accomplish? If this is so important to you start writing letters and calling your local representatives to demand they pass laws for mandatory paid sick leave for all these workplaces. This is the fault of the work environment, not the worker.

By the time that happens, if it ever does, grocerys will probably all be self checkout and restaurants will be served by robots..

I just think it’s common sense business practice to be on top of basic hygiene in food related establishments. If I complain to the manager and so do other Imas here, we may actually get some change if they see it’s important to customers.

Capitalism is always more efficient than bureaucracy.

So does that mean restaurants and groceries shouldn’t enforce any hygiene policies??

I understand your main point that many times it’s out of our control, but that doesn’t mean stores shouldn’t implement basic common sense hygiene policies, especially with employees that are in close contact with food.

Except that your cashier is really not coming into contact with your food; that’s my point. It’s not as if she were cooking or serving you food in a restaurant. Your groceries are almost all packaged, and the produce that isn’t packaged has to be washed anyway. You think the migrant farm workers who picked your grapes and tomatoes had a bathroom with running hot water and soap when they needed to relieve themselves in the fields? Dream on, honey.

No. Tell the grocer they need an appropriate policy and enforce it. Gross.

At a minimum they shouldn’t be doing it in my face so I can at least dream.. Wink

Why can't they just wear a face mask?

I won't attempt to convert you to socialism, but at least you could let the business owners know of your concerns and that you'll be shopping somewhere else where they don't have sick workers, because under capitalism, losing business is a powerful motivation.

Also, even once there are self-checkouts (and the food is also put on the shelves by robots) and robot waiters (and cooks), there will still be people servicing the robots. You just won't see it when they sneeze onto the robot.

I get that you're grossed out by the germ-laden cashier, but the reality is that germs are everywhere. Everytime you touch a door knob, a shopping cart, push a button for an elevator. Germs, germs, germs. Just wash your hands and take your vitamins.
