I've been attending simchas for quite some time and don't think this is new enough to be called a trend.

I bring earplugs for myself and DH and headphones (the kind used for ear protection at shooting ranges) for my kids. My older ones use the small earplugs that I also use.
Hearing loss is cumulative : from listening to loud music, aerobics classes and smachot! The damage starts in utero, so pregnant women beware, especially in the 2nd and third trimesters.
