A Chanukah Sonnet

Not merely for spoils they conquered the land
But to spread their culture into Israel
Why Jews held back, they did not understand
Forced to decide, they would choose to rebel.
While few in number, they went to attack
Their faith in G-d facing off with phalanx
Faith won, and watching the retreating back
The Jews raised voices in prayer and thanks.
Back in the Temple, light still far away
In search of a flask, still sealed and still pure
Again faith won; oil enough for one day
Lasted for eight days, enough to bring more.
Though that Greek culture has faded away
The Chanukah flames still burn to this day.

A Chanukah Limerick

A Jewboy who lived in the hood
Claimed that microwaved latkes were good.
In horror we cried,
"They must only be fried!
You've got Cha-nuke-ah misunderstood!"

A Chanukah Haiku

Live the miracle
See how one small menorah
Can light up the world

A Chanukah Tanka

Small flames flickering
Steadfast wicks suck up each drop
Aspiring beyond
Yet tethered, shining below
The story of our people.

A CHANUKAH Acrostic

Cheerful snowflakes tumble down
Happy faces all around
A lively dreidel game beginning
Nun, I guess I am not winning
Under mother's watchful eye
Kids start up the latke fry
All the colored candles melt
Hands stuffed full of Chanukah gelt

Our hope reignited

A Chanukah Rondeau

They did not storm our walls with might
Conquered peaceful and polite
Act as you wish, we do not care
Seek only to our culture share.
We did not know enough to fight.

Soon they felt threatened at our sight
Our faith, G-d fear, the flames we light
They tried to squelch, they could not bear
-- For we believe.

And so began a painful night
While most gave in, some chose to fight
Our ragtag group, the "arms" we bear
Our victory absurd, but there
Gave rise to persevering light
-- For we believe.

A Chanukah Parody

Oh Chanukah, oh Chanukah
Come light the menorah
But is this a mitzvah
We learn from the Torah?

Gather round the table
Let's open each book
From Talmud to Taz
We'll take a closer look.

And though we're still learning
Make sure those flames you ignite
For though the verse does not say
Rabbinically we must obey
And that is a mitzvah all right

You do aspire to heaven
And this is one of seven
A mitzvah derabanan all right.

Oh Chanukah, oh Chanukah
Come light the Menorah
But why not Beis Shamai
Should be our mesorah?

Gather round the table
And let's try to see
The lesson we can learn
From the way things came to be.

And while we are learning
So many new things now we know
In our goodness, in our deeds
Awareness of another's needs
Note how we constantly grow

Each night we light more
Bais Hillel's way for sure,
It reminds us to constantly grow.

Glad you enjoy them! Some I wrote last Chanukah, some this Chanukah. I wanted a poem for each night of Chanukah Smile

As Chanukah Ends

I should feel the joy
Of the increasing light
I should dance with the flames
That grow more each night

But just as Chanukah spans
The days of waning moon
My mind, it keeps crying
You're ending too soon!

I delight in the nights
Spent with sizzling oil
My greasy hands and stovetop
Evidence of my toil

Huge outdoor menorahs
Bring me to tears of pride
Car-top menorahs
Make me rejoice in each ride

I love games of dreidel
So earnestly played
The cheers and the sighs
So many memories made

I relish jammy donuts
And powdered sugar faces
Latke-fueled contentment
Brings me to happy places

I enjoy gelt-giving nightly
How the big kids are thrilled
And the toddler's confusion
At coins not choco-filled

I luxuriate in the moments
After the candles lit
Where guilt-free, I take the time
To just gaze, and sit

So as the menorah fills
With each light that we add
Instead of getting happier
I find myself getting sad

I know I should be joyful
But instead I feel bereft
How can Chanukah end so quickly?
Is there only one night left?

But then we turn a corner
And I'm heartened too
For Chanukah, it spans as well
The moon's waxing anew

Teves sneaks in
Under Chanukah's glow
And gently reminds me
There are more times to grow

Though the menorah will fill
And then be put away
There's a new month beginning
Each day's a new day

Life will continue
Tasks, fears, new aims
Remember that the future's lit
By eight tiny flames.
