Hi all,

I'm looking for clean and engaging, very well-written books that I can read for the purpose of improving my vocabulary and writing. I was a voracious (and non-discriminating) reader in my teen years and I feel like that helped me be articulate and a good writer.

Since I've been married however, my reading consumption has been much more limited and I definitely notice the difference in my ability to articulate myself verbally and on paper.

I'd love suggestions of clean, well written books. I particularly enjoy books where I feel like I end up learning something (like historical fiction), but am open to other genres as well (I only enjoy nonfiction if it is very engaging).

Thanks in advance!

Hilary Mantel writes high quality historical fiction. „bring up the bodies“ and “wolf hall” are about Thomas Cromwell at the Time of Henry the 8th in England. Very well written ( expanded my vocabulary for sure) and clean.
“Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine” is also a great book and has a model structure for aspiring writers.

Fiction: Daniel Deronda. Sweet book with a Jewish theme, and a classic.

Non Fiction: Eats, Shoots, and Leaves. Hysterically funny book on grammar and punctuation.

What about reading people's memoirs?
I would recommend those by Beverly Cleary, Lucette Lagnado, Agatha Christie. You'll learn a lot about the time periods when they grew up.

Georgette Heyer. You may end up with a somewhat archaic way of expressing yourself, but man does she have a vocabulary! I had to look up quite a few words in the last book I read.
