My car has 5k necessary repairs if I keep it. Is there any value in trading it in for 1k?

Depends what the options are.
After the repairs, do you anticipate that it still has a reasonable life expectancy? Or is the car wearing out and you can expect many more repairs?
How much would it be worth on the resale market as-is? After repairs?
How much of a tax break could you get for donating it as-is?
How much do you plan to spend if you buy a new car?

You're leaving out a big part of the story. How much will you're car be worth after the 5k repair?
