I decided I need to dedicate time for fun... It needs to be something I can do at home, at my own time. I suddenly had a great interest in painting.

I am not a painter or artist, but I am creative and think I would very much enjoy painting something that I can potentially hang up in my house.

For all you painters out there, I need some advice!

1. Whats the best type of paint to use (for a beginning, but something that will look professional- if that makes sense)
2. What do I paint on- a canvas? Are there different types of canvasas that I should be aware of (b/c in my eyes they are all created equal)
3. I've been seeing a lot of lucite frames around.. What do I paint on so I can frame in lucite (does that even make sense?!)

HELP EDUCATE ME!!! What else do I need to know? I don't want to spend a fourtane on this, but really want it to come out nice (I'm imagining something more abstract since I can't draw)

Thank you!!!

Acrylic is a pretty beginner-friendly paint category.
I would suggest a brief tour of pinterest or something to get an idea of what you might like, and then see what it would take to imitate.

For a lucite frame I'd recommend watercolor or inks. But you may find that difficult as a beginner. Acrylic sounds like your best bet. There are thicker canvases you can buy that dont require a frame, if you like that look. If you want to frame it then any canvas or canvas board is good .

I started my painting hobby in the dollar store. I bought a few large canvases and an assortment of acrylic paint colours and brushes. Then I searched on Google/Pinterest "paint night" or "DIY Wall Art", and found a painting sample that I thought I could copy, then I just went for it!
I never upgraded my supplier and still use dollar store supplies . I have numerous painting of mine hind up around my house. Recently I framed three random ones that had a bit of a similar colour scheme, and hung them in a row in one of my hallways, and it looks like a simple gallery wall. Clean and fresh. Mind you, I used Ikea frames to frame them although I did have to be creative figuring out how to keep the back on, as they are not meant for framing canvases.
Good luck on starting your new hobby!

What to paint on depends what you're making.

Agree that google or youtube search for DIY wall art would be an excellent place to start.

Framing can get expensive. If you use stretched canvas then you don't need a frame, you can just paint the sides.

Curious what kind of dollar store supplies you're using; I've never seen anything worth the dollar. Canvas panels maybe. Walmart has paints that are affordable and decent quality. I find that using low-quality paints is frustrating because they just don't work - they're see-through, or they don't adhere well to the surface, or they're piecey... I don't own anything expensive, but there's a clear difference between the not-so-expensive and the dirt-cheap. Even within that category it's a bit of a gamble. I've found that craft paint works well enough on canvas for many projects, so I'd rather buy craft paint than very cheap art paints.
