I'm looking for a gown for a siblings wedding. I don't want to put in alot of money, and am hoping to be able to sell it afterwards. Gowns don't come tznius ( at least cheap ones). I am wondering what the easiest and cheapest alterations to make would be. Ie. Is it cheaper to add sleeves, line a dress or build up a neck line? If you could post pictures and your ideas of how to alter, it would be helpful. Also, if the material doesn't need to match ( can look good by adding elsewhere/ be a good contrast/ a style where almost matching is good enough) that's a plus. Mainly I guess I am trying to figure out the price factor, I am totally clueless about sewing!
Thanks in advance!

Don't bother with sewing- get a high neck midi dress and just add a dressy bolero jacket

Instead of linjng a dress, usually you could wear a shell under it.

An illusion neckline can be lined out layered easier than others.
Post what you like and we can comment on the possibilities of each.

Lol. I am. I mean to each their own,I just don't like the look for formal. I do it all the time for regular weekday and Shabbos.
I think my question was for people more familiar with sewing, what is considered minor/ less pricey alterations? And what price point to expect.
Bolero is a good idea, how do I go about matching one to a dress if it doesn't come together?
Lymnok thanks for your offer. I will try a bit later iyh.

A shell under a gown/elegant dress takes away the elegance of the dress, it cheapens it.

"illusion" is a kind of fine net used to make bridal veils and transparent sleeves and décolletages for formal wear. If the dress has such there-but-not-there parts, they can be lined with opaque fabric. The fabric match doesn't have to be perfect because the illusion net camouflages minor differences. If a whole new sleeve has to be made and a neckline filled in, matching the fabric can be a problem. Often this problem is circumvented by adding wide trim at the join, so that the dissimilar fabrics are not right beside each other.

So it means that the top is see through? It's really pretty. I see what you mean about lining with a shell.
2 questions ( not picking on this dress specifically, it's just a good example of some of the things I noticed on a bunch of dresses) The neck is a bit wide, a shell would be visible from the top. Is there a way to adjust the neckline? Also what could be done for the v back. How much would these type of adjustments typically cost?
Say I found a sleeveless dress with a good neck line ( or even a low one) would it be costly to add sleeves?
Is it possible to add sleeves to a halter gown?

Expect to spend up to $200 on alterations if you need to fix the neck or add sleeves. Just buying the coordinating material can be pricey. Prices vary on location and the kind of altering.
Don’t bother with a halter neck.
An illusion gown is probably your best bet; they are pretty in now so you can find a lot of options online. Keep in mind that some high neck, long sleeve gowns have a scoop back and/or are very tight at the hips.
Asos should have a lot of well priced options.

It’s all pricey. My friend just spent close to $400 on material, building up, steaming gown after etc. was worth it for her because it’s beautiful and fits her perfectly and she can sell it after and still pay less than buying or renting tznius. But it’s not cheap by any means

Google arab modest gowns and you should be able to get a fully tznius high neck long sleeve gown for great prices. Only thing is they look like they fit really tight, so you might want to get a size bigger to be completely tznius.

Did she spend 400 total? Or 400 on alterations? Do you know how much she was able to sell it for?

Thank you everyone for your help. Sebastian, this is so cool. I'd have never thought to look at tjmax for gowns! And you have given me hope of finding something with a good neckline!
To the poster above me who mentioned Arab modest gowns. They are probably made and sold by Arabs? If I bought I would be supporting them ( and possibly terrorism??)?
