Can anyone please suggest to me what to do with a 6 year old who has developed massive anxiety? Fear of me driving to fast, fear of missing the bus, of not being picked up from school on time etc, she'll ask me numerous times if I will be on time to the bus stop, to school, to anything!...I should add that none of these scenarios have every occured, so I have no idea where it's coming from...she's always been a worrier, but now it's getting worse. She's much better in school than she is at home. Is she too young for a therapist? If so, any recommendations for anyone in Brooklyn? She won't talk to a random person so I have no clue how that would work. Any othere ideas appreciated, I'm not worried about Pandas, she's always been a worrier...

For starters there are some things you can do for her yourself, to help her stand up to her worries. Reading self-help books can help alot. I found "Worry No More" helpful to me as a parent and "What to do when you Worry Too Much" helpful for my anxious daughter. You can read it with her and discuss what to do about her worries, and how she can help herself.

Worrying is a vicious cycle because the more you worry, the more you worry (as the book explains). IOW giving in to anxiety breads more anxiety. You will need to help her be firm and not feed into her worries in order to help her control them.

Find a good counselor. My daughter had these issues and BH she has gotten much better. She taught her self talk and other methods to alleviate fears. I have been told it gets worse with puberty so I recommend starting now. First counselor we used wasn’t great so if after a little while you don’t see results try someone else.

I am OOT so I don’t have any specific recommendations but if a psychologist is too pricey use a MSW. That is who my daughter sees.

My daughter has similar issues. I’m in therapy and have discussed it with my therapist. SOmetimes all it takes is a therapist training you on how to deal with it. She has given me tips on how to help my daughter and Bh there has been improvement.
It can be a good option if your daughter doesn’t t want to speak to someone.

Not to sound like a broken record, but any new anxiety, or physical symptoms like bedwetting or urinary frequency or food restriction can be tied to recent infection or virus and might be lyme or pan's etc...
That is what happened to my son and he is slowly getting better with treatment.

The above website can guide u what symptoms look like.
U said she repetitively needs reassurance and that has been recent. It seems to me like this is OCD of intrusive thoughts etc...

My child was also a worrier but not to the degree of ckshe is still diag used with pandas...rule it out first by reading the link to see if symptoms fit. Many kids with pandas can hold in their anxiety all day and then explode at night (kind of like a pressure cooker)

Have the same with my 6 year old. I'm afraid her adjustment to first grade is impacting this.
We are planning on doing a full work up to rule out anything organic. Though our doc wanted us to wait a couple of weeks since her sister has strep.

There is a dr Zelinger in woodmere who is excellent for anxiety.
I know 2 people who have used her with their daughters. Excellent results. I know each case is different, but she didn’t drag it along.
Can google her.

People should learn to travel for quality doctors and therapists. I do hope you find closer but only if they are really good.

Zissy Zellermaier is in Bp, she does play therapy. She was recommended by Relief, and I was happy with her. (Diff issue though, so maybe make your own call to Relief.). To the posters telling her to travel, this is not always possible. Not everyone has a car, the time etc to travel for weekly sessions. No need to send the mom on a guilt trip.

I agree with this. My husband drives my son an hour each way to a top therapist for anxiety and other issues. And he has to wait there for the hour. That is three hours. But it’s worth It.

Not everyone can make it work to travel that kind of distance. People have jobs, various family situations, lack of transportation options, and myriad other reasons why it simply will not be possible for them to travel extensively on a regular basis. This isn't a one time consult.

My daughter's pandas started out exactly the same way. She has this exact same fear of missing the bus. We also almost missed the diagnosis because other symptoms didn't seem to match up, but in hindsight we just weren't noticing/interpreting them correctly. Please do not rule this out without seeing a pandas-literate MD. You will save yourself years and years of heartache. No amount of therapy can retrain an inflamed brain. The fact that she's always been a worrier absolutely does not rule out pandas, in fact it makes it more likely. https://walkinginquicksand.com.....nity/

There are enough good therapists in Brooklyn. Call Relief Resources for a referral.
