You need to go for training. Start with something basic, like slingerland and then you can always take more workshops and training to build your skills and try new techniques. You first need a solid base.

Depends where you work. In some places you need a degree to work in special end under govt funding and in some places not. Also depends if you want to work privately or in a school.

It would be in the students' best interest and yours if you went to school and received real training in becoming a reading specialist, there are so many wonderful programs that we have nowadays that help so many children.. why would you take a chance on a child's future and not get a degree and full training.

Do you have a specific area of interest like dyslexia, language processing etc.. that may help you narrow down what you are looking for, just by googling those topics.

I want to be the lady who helped my DS so much!! She was Wlison and Orton - Gillingham trained and helped him learn the “rules” of reading which didn’t come naturally. She probably also works with children with dyslexia. I would want to do private tutoring. It seems like these programs are only open to teachers.

I know people who trained in intensive OG courses and have a very strong foundation for teaching even though they don't have a separate teaching degree. However, some of them went on to get teaching degrees and certification because it opens up additional job opportunities. For private tutoring you can really just do a specialized course.
