It’s rude because it’s giving the impression that you are assessing the cost. Is it sterling or plate? Or (horrors!) stainless? Name brand or nameless? Made in England or China?
If I were in the market for new tableware and admired my hosts’ , I would resist the urge to peek ( harder even than turning down dessert) and simply tell mine host/ess that I like these dishes, where did she get them ? I would not ask for a make and model number. If they want to tell me, they will. And if not, it’s none of my business.
