Smile a lot, even if you feel like crying. They need to see you looking happy. Every stage at this age passes, so even if you don't figure out how to deal with it, eventually it will be over.

Stress less and enjoy them more (talking to myself)

A firm tone with clear instructions works a lot better then frustrated yelling (again, mental note to self as child wrecks the room I just cleaned while I take a five min bathroom break).

Make sure they're getting enough sleep , are fed and not to cold or hot. This prevents a lot of crankiness.

PATIENCE. The most important thing you can give to your children is to be patient with them. They are kids after all. (I wish someone taught me this in seminary instead of rambans…)

You don't have to notice everything (preaching to myself here)

For young babies: sleep generates sleep. Babies can’t be awake for more than 2 hours

Low expectations. The lower the better. I love toddlers because I expect very little from them. The more you expect the more you get frustrated.

Be fun. Kids are happy when it’s fun to be at home. Be creative, when something’s not working out come up with some new ides. There are so many inventions/toys out there that can help.

Patience. The older I get the more I have the happier my kids are. I wish I could tell my younger self to have more.

Instead of yelling - sing. “Time to go to bed” “get into the bath”

I recently received this from Sara Chan Radcliffe (her daily emails are fantastic. I feel like she can see into my house).

“It's hard - and often impossible - to get your child under the age of 3 to cooperate with your wishes. Three main strategies will get be your mainstay through these early years: childproofing (remove everything), distraction ("Wow! Look at the truck!") and positive attention ("You're eating so nicely!"). In most cases, discipline for this age group is ineffective or increases problem behaviors.”

For little babies this so true to have a happy baby.

Laugh, sing, dance. It changes the environment.
Allow mess that cleans easily. Entertains them and builds skills. Washable markers, paper and glue, water.
When they are destructive, its their way of exploring the world- what will happen. Thank Hashem that they are a healthy toddler, it really switches off the annoyance.

Friends & family sign up at dailyparentingposts.com/sign-up

The emails are fantastic. Both parenting and marriage advice. (You do get some advertising emails once in a while)

Another one from this week “
If you allow your child to verbally abuse you (call you names, insult you, use bad language), you are allowing him to verbally abuse his future spouse and children since, by permitting it, you are helping to wire in a strong behavioral/emotional circuit in his brain that will resurface whenever he feels upset with someone in his life.“

Ditto for Sarah Chana Radcliffe’s emails, they are amazing!!
Basically, do not go to bathroom while they’re around because 80% of the time it leads to disaster!
Also, keep it light happy and positive . They all grow up. I always say, my son won’t be spilling flour all over the house when he’s married, but he will remember if I try to keep a happy and calm atmosphere at home....
