I'm looking for ideas for my kids to entertain themselves during winter break. Unfortunately I'm not home for most of the day so I can't take them out, but I'd be willing to send them around town for a few hours just to get out. Today I sent them for lunch, was thinking of the aquarium but I'm not sure if they're allowed to go there without a chaperone...more ideas are welcome!
2 high schoolers and 2 elementary school kids ages 10-7.

Go to the craft store and get a craft that will occupy them for a few hours
Ch childrens museum( it’s not free thought but the 2 younger ones will enjoy it)
Ice skating in Prospect Park- check hrs
Chukee Cheese- you can get a coupon online
Take a trip to Target

Jewish Children's Museum and Kids in Action (indoors), and ice skating in Prospect Park (outdoors) come to mind as great, reasonably-priced local options.

Scavenger hunt at local supermarket
Chopped or iron chef type competition for dinner if you trust them to cook

But can they go to these places unattended?

It's not unattended if they're being supervised by responsible high schoolers. Some places may require an 18-year-old, but most won't.

What about Kings Plaza? Would you trust them at the mall?

Idk kp intimidates me a little. I'd allow it down the avenues around my area but they're used to that

Painting or art centers can keep them busy for hours. I second the scavenger hunt idea. Make them run around town to pick up treats and goodies (and do errands on the way). Just needs advance preparation.

I had my kids do a scavenger hunt at Dollar Tree. They can pair up or work individually. They each had a list of 10-12 items to find, and after we purchased the items, we compared our purchases.
For example:
Something cute
Something soft
Something related to winter
Something beginning with the letter B
Something that comes in pairs
Something silly
Something blue
Something you can wear
Something to give to someone you love
