Does my ds need to bench gomel after open heart surgery?

He will be going to shul for the first time after his surgery does he need to bench gomel?

If no one answers, call a beis hora'a. Try Lakewood.
And may he have a complete and enduring refuah shleima!

I would think so. I had to do it after pancreatitis. But ask your rabbi

Definitely ask. If he doesn't want to (is embarrassed, for example), you can include that in the question.

When my husband had a stent put in he did bench gomel. Hope your ds has a refuah shelaima!

Dunno how old your son is (and refuah shlaima btw!) but I heard of a Shul where a boy under barmitzvah didn't bensch gomel, but publicly acknowledged his hakoras hatov to Hashem in front of the Kehilla (short, sweet and very moving speech).

Some do after any general anesthesia. If this has solved the problem and he is out of danger it sounds like he would. Personally, I’d bentch Gomel in this situation without asking.

Generally the halacha is that a person who was sick and healed bentches gomel. Is there some reason that he doesn't want to?

If he is over bar mitzvah then yes, as far as I know.
