I was advised to call Mrs grandman in monsey to get me an appointment with dr Clyde Alexander for prism glasses in London. Does anyone know why I should call her rather than calling dr Alexander’s office directly? Is it that she can get appointments faster? Does she do it as a chesed or is there a fee? How long does it take to get an appointment? How much does dr Alexander charge?

Calling to the office will most likely give you a minimum half a year wait. It doesn't hurt to try her. Maybe she knows of cancellations or earlier opening dates.

I think her name is Gradman. Heard she is able to get an appt earlier. Not sure if its chesed or $$.
My friend in London said she paid Alexander 300-400 pounds which is about $600. She said it didnt help her child. Ppl from NY swear by him.
When I called Gradman, her husband responded and said I can go here to Dr. Rubin for initial checkup, but not to take his prescription advice. Rolling Eyes

How do you speak to Mrs gradman if her husband answers the phone. I hear he’s the gatekeeper. How do I get to her?

There are a couple of doctors in the US that are also good with prisms glasses, one is even a mentee of Dr Alexander iirc.

I feel like sometimes in our community where our child's education is so important we develop a herd mentality and everyone starts following the masses re Drs, therapies etc. which may or may not work.

Before traveling to London make sure to do some research on the local less costly options.

The husband schedules the appointments she does reading lessons/Kriah tutoring. For appointments this is a Chesed they do & don’t charge for. It pays to go to Dr Rubin first to see if your child is a candidate for prisms. If he/she is then look into getting an appointment with Dr Alexander. There is no need to travel to London to find out your child does not need prisms.

I don't know.

My sister just went to London and it LITERALLY saved three of her children's lives. I tried someone here in the US and we were meh. Don't know if he's really better or my child's issues were different, but it's almost the same price so why not go to London? It's very expensive here as well.

I cant comment about prisms as I dont know enough but I do find the herd mentality true in other areas. I always try to keep an open mind and do what Feels right (with lots of research) even if that makes me “unpopular” and the odd man out at times!

We did prism and full vision therapy with dr warshowsky 5 years ago. Now when we went to the Bernstein reading center Rabbi Weber said that ds would do very well with a prism from dr Alexander. So I really don’t want to go to another local person.

We were very unhappy with Dr Warshawsky for various reasons. Plus, he's more expensive. I think it comes out cheaper, or the same price, to go to England.

I would recommend Dr. Nyar, he is in Westchester
(914) 345-1490
I had good experience with him, plus it's only $300.

Op here. I got an appointment with dr Cobrin - dr Alexander’s associate and they said that dr Alexander will come in and do a quick check/review at the end of the appointment. Anyone deal with dr Cobrin?

I truly believe this is so. My son has trouble reading, but is not a candidate for prisms per the specialist at our children’s hospital. A friend of mine insists that no one knows better than Dr Alexander, and I should be able to pick up and take him to London (and take off from work, and leave my whole family) if I really want to help him. Not everything is a quick fix.

I also had a top optamologist tell me that my child wasnt a candidate for prisms and that it wouldnt help him. Instead he recommended I accept that this child will be an "auditory lerner".
Since hes a boy I decided to take the risk and fly to London, mostly because I heard such rave reviews and how much he helped children with reading issues. Bh my son helped tremendously and I have since gone back with another child.
Since it's not always easy to travel, I tried another dr locally who came highly recommended (and charges a fortune) for a follow up and he fell back.
Dr Alexander specializes in reading issues and understands and respects our needs. He is also extremely honest and will tell you up front if and how much he can help. Hes truly an amazing person.
Just sharing this out of gratitude to hkbh that he helped me find the right shliach.
If this is something you can afford to do, it's the greatest gift you can give your child especially your sons. It's an effort free fix (except for the travel) that makes a huge difference.
I've been through vision therapy and the works.
Also I wouldnt travel for dr kobrin. If you do go insist on seeing dr Alexander alone.
Good luck

We recently did this and were VERY comfortable and happy with Dr. Kobrin. Dr. Alexander came in at the end and issued the same diagnoses (there were several) and recommendations. We saw real improvement in about a month! This was after spending much time and money on several US vision specialists (opthalmologist, optometrist, and vision therapist) and many months of torturous, ineffective vision therapy. I only wish we had gone sooner.

And dollars and cents, the plane tickets, visit, and glasses were less than months of semi-local vision therapy.

Is it only helpful for reading issues?
My 1st grader is having a hard time with reading. However writing is also an issue, at times letters and numbers are written forwards ands backwards. Sometime the whole sentence could be mirror image. I have been thinking to get her evaluated to see if it would help.

Royal blue and hot pink - thank you. We’ll need Cobrin and dr Alexander will come in and review and confirm. It’s way cheaper that vision therapy. I spent thousands on vision therapy and an enormous amount of time and it did not lead to any results. Iy’h dr Cobrin and alexander will be the shaliach for us.

Technical question - they said we should bring the frame with us and it takes around 2 weeks to have the glasses fitted with the prism. Then they send it back with someone coming to NY. Is that correct? Some random person just takes it back for us and then we track them down?

How often do you need to return for checkups?

Writing is closely related to reading.

I think they give the glasses to another patient - IOW, you take back someone else's glasses, and someone else takes back yours.
