Staying by a friend with children ages 5-10 and want to bring an exciting game or toy as a gift for the kids. Anyone have a recommendation for something really popular with kids? Willing to spend up to $40.

Settlers of Catan? Wow. I tried playing that once and wanted to take a nap afterwards - it was so mentally exhausting.

Maybe do a selection of games/toys. If you are willing to spend $40 you could probably get 3 or even 4 games (depending on current pricing). I’ve noticed that that is often more exciting than one more expensive game.

Stratego. Uno. Battleship, skip-bo, stix, maze balls.

Those are the popular ones in my house.

If you are in Lakewood, I would also recommend going in to ‘toys for thought’ and asking for suggestions. They really know their games.

I give a gifted certificate to a toy store. That's how I don't have have to wrack my brain or get something I don't don't whether they have or not. A gc in a toy store is always appreciated in a house of little kids.

It’s a little hard to explain without you seeing the cards but was really easy to understand from the directions.

Basically, different types of donuts are worth different amounts of points and some also have actions to do. The goal is to have the most points at the end of the game. You get cards by ‘bidding’. If you are the only one who wants the card, it’s yours, if more people want it, it’s discarded. There is strategy (do you go for the one you want or the one you don’t want someone else to get. Do you collect groups, etc) but even younger kids pick it up quickly & there is definitely luck involved, too.

Spot It, Happy Salmon, or Rat a Tat Cat are all card games suitable for a range of ages. With your budget I think you could get all three.
