My son is too old to take his temperature rectally, but won't keep a thermometer still in his mouth, so I took his temp under his arm and got 102.7.

Does anyone know how that compares to an oral temp? Like does that mean he's really a degree higher or lower? Or all they all the same?

Thanks!

I find the ear thermometer the most accurate and easiest to use. I never know the right spot to put it underarm and most kids are always warm underarm, I don't find it accurate.

I think you are supposed to add 2 degrees to underarm, or 1 degree to oral temps to get them accurate.

An underarm temperature can vary by the room temperature. No one is too old for a rectal, I've done them on adults!

Doing an ear temp on kids can be hard. If there is wax in the ear or you are not aimed only at the ear drum it can affect the accuracy.

How you choose to measure is also dependent on how accurate you need to be. if you got 102, your kid probably has fever but you don't need to be so accurate, so that's OK.

Bit off topic when do most stop doing rectal on kids?

Do u remember having as a child at an age where u were uncomfortable and embarrassed?

No rectal after baby stage. I think that borders on abuse.

No I'm saying that your shouldn't do rectal in anyone older than a baby.

I've never seen anyone even consider it

I guess you havent seen everything. I have seen it done on preschool children. ( I am NOT saying I think its right or wrong) this was perfectly normal years ago. today- its much less common- if done at all.

I'm curious what others do today?
