Hi,

My tennants called to complain that there is a mold problem in the apartment. I went over to see what they were describing, and was shocked. The walls are practically black!!!! She said she cleaned the mold with bleach 2 weeks ago but it came back.
This is a part new- part renovated apartment!!!! (Stone walls, in Israel).
Add to that, the mold is not only on outside walls, so I can't figure out what is causing it and why its spreading so fast.
The furiture got moldy too- closets, beds, etc.

They air out the apt. every day, and we put double sealing when those walls were built.

Any ideas what I can do to solve this problem?

I suggest first calling your home insurance company

You need to call a professional mold company - you need to find out the source of the moisture which is causing the mold to proliferate.

Bleach apparently helps mold grow back.

This is definitely a job for professionals.

In the meantime, the family really needs to move out, especially if they have any children. Black mold is extremely toxic, and can neurological damage even in much smaller amounts.

With any luck, your insurance should compensate them for relocation, and you for lack of income on the unit.

I would consider mold to be in the same category as fire and smoke damage.

I second this. Mold should be taken very seriously.

FYI, since you do not know what caused it, you should realize your insurance company may not pay to repair it. Get in contact with an insurance adjuster, as well as a mold specialist. Mold can spread very quickly, especially if something is wet. Is there carpet there? A sub floor? When these get wet, an entire home and all belongings can be covered in mold within a few days.

As I posted above, you need to call in experts as quickly as possible.

If this is new renovation, you might have inadvertently created a mold friendly environment by sealing in a leak of some kind
