Just curious why you wouldn't use glass, if it's going to be underneath lit candles?

Maybe I should use glass because my current one has melted spots all over.
But thats what came with my wedding present.
I'm also worried that glass will just break in this house

It protects the silver from scratches.
The store I got mine had it cut specifically for the tray. You may need it custome made it go back to the store you bought your tray.
