We are due soon and would like to name Yoel after my father in law. Do you know any Yoels who are NOT called Yoily? I do not like Yoily at all.

And do you pronounce it YO-elle (like hamalach ha GO-elle) or Yole (rhymes with mole)

I'm probably not in your type of community, considering that I have never met a Yoily. Yoel, on the other hand, is a very familiar name to me. It is pronounced with two syllables.

I have a relative Yoel. His parents are VERY specific that he is to be called Yoel and not Yoily. So far that's what he's called, but he's just a baby so he hasn't been around too long.

Pronounced Yo- elle.

I have a close relative, a kid, named Yoel. He has never been called anything other than Yoel. I’ve also never met anyone named Yoel who goes by anything else.

Sure I know some Yoels. You don’t have to call him Yoely.

How old was your fil when he passed away? Most Yoelys are maybe 39/40 now.

I have a friend with a Yoel. Her parents hate the name, so they call him Jo-jo. I'ts cute, and it kind of stuck. I'm sure he'll insist on Yoel when he gets older, and make his nickname just a family thing.

Yoelys may be 39/40. But I know plenty of non satmar people from the early 1900s who were Yoel. Very Happy And I'm quite sure the name goes back thousands of years before that too. Smile

I know. I’m just curious because she mentioned the Yoely part. Most that are not named after the Satmer rebbe are called Yoel.

I know a few Yoels. Pronounced Yo-ell. One is Heimish, one is Litvish, one is Chassidish (not Satmar). I know a Yoeli that's Heimish, and a Yoeli that's Chassidish but not Satmar. But I agree with flowerpower that Yoeli with the I or Y at the end is mostly known as a Satmar name. .
The name Yoel is a pretty common name in many circles, dating back to Yoel Hanavi.
I think it's a beautiful name.

I have a Yoel. Pronounced Yo-el. Just like it is spelled. We didn't want him to be a yoily, yoilish, etc. I am not Satmer.

So he is Yoel rhyming with hamalach haGo'el, not mole or pole. I don't know any yole moles.

I know another litvish Yoiel, pronounced Yoy-il

I am not chassidish and I know several Yoels and zero Yoilys. Some are pronounced Yo-elle and some Yole. I also know a few who are called Eli.
