I'm looking for books for my kids, ages 10-12, about the historic land of Israel. Not anything today, no politics, no zionism... just history of the land, stories of tzaddikim who lived there, some kind of historical timeline of when Jews lived where...
I once saw an old book called eretz avoseinu, it was somewhat of a tour book, but gave background and history for many places in Israel. Sort of like doing a self guided tour. It had maps too. Something like that would work too.
Any ideas would be appreciated.
So far all I've found in the local bookstore is "Sacred Soil" based on Rav Moshe Wolfson's discourses. It's not so much what I am looking for. A bit above the kids level, so my kids are finding it boring. A little too droning, if you know what I mean. Much too much philosophy about the holiness of the land, sort of like divrei Torah. I want more history, and more kids friendly

The Heavenly City series
Jerusalem, The Eye of the Universe by Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan
Land of Our Heritage, Dovid Rossoff
Not exactly what you're looking for but they might like
Take Me to the Holy Land, Tzivia Yanofsky
Moti's Trip to Yerushalayim, Sara Gordon
Picture This, Esther Tscholkowsky
ETA: I seem to remember something by one or both of the Zakons but maybe not.

Actually these look like exactly what I am looking for. Some for younger kids and some for older, but all look very interesting. I'm going to try to get a few of them and see which catches their interest
Thanks!

Pleasure. Just looked in the school library catalogue. And I also second Forever My Jerusalem.

The title sounds a lot darker than it is:
"A City in Flames"
Is a factual book which does an amazing job at telling the story of the rebellions against the Romans, pre-destruction of the Beit Hamikdash. The reader really feels like he's living the experience, while learning about the geography, history, archeology, and texts which teach us this story.
Appropriate for older readers.

This is a fantastic book. It might be for slightly older kids than yours are right now (I don’t remember for sure) but definitely keep it in mind for now or the future.
