I'm looking for a gift for my inlaws. In the past I've purchased 5 boxes of magna tiles, two big sets of tegu blocks, 1,000 pieces of Keva, etc. I have run out of ideas for a very classy, versatile toy that kids of all ages can enjoy. Another time I bought a Haba playworld. Educational and good quality. Kids range for grandchildren that are newborn through about a 12 yr old that would be playing but I want the 8-12 yr old range to be happiest. TIA.

IMO Playmobil is for younger kids... my 8 year old still plays with it but when my other DS was 11 he found it babyish.
I think 8-12 year olds prefer the mini Lego sets.
That age also enjoys board games and card games.

There are playmobil sets that are specifically geared for older kids.
Mini lego is also an idea.

For that age I would get a bunch of board games. That's what the kids around here play with most.

Do they have room for a foosball table or a ping pong table?

Is an outdoor trampoline an option, or too dangerous?

I second the game table, if room. And it will likely be under 500, so you can get a few board games since only 2 kids can use the game table at a time.
Otherwise I would say board games. I don't know what Ticket to Ride is, but older kids love that and Risk, strategy, monopoly, etc. Hours of fun. So nice of you!

If they have an outdoor area a big trampoline can be a great hit and fit into your budget

Air hockey, foosball, or ping pong table, and laser tag guns are great for active play. A set of popular board games, including a couple of good single player games are good for quieter play.
