Your manual will state whether they should go in but as Ila posted, in general, you are NOT supposed to leave the oven racks in as they are not built for the self cleaning process.

Thanks. Do you clean the oven with easy off or it’s ok to clean with anything else?

I leave them in. They lose their luster, but I'm told it's necessary to kasher.

I leave the racks in, but the metal is no longer so shiny or smooth. You can use a little oil to make them slide better after cleaning.

The oven locks during the self-clean cycle. It's all or nothing.

Do I need to clean the oven specifically with easy off or anything is ok?

According to my Rav the oven needs to be clean and have no food residue on it. No particular cleaning agents are necessary.

As per the Star K:

Most oven manufacturers instruct the consumer to remove the oven racks before self-cleaning so they will not discolor. However, one may self-clean the oven with the racks inside even though they might discolor. After the self-clean cycle, one should use a little oil on the side of the racks to easily slide them in and out of the oven. There are some manufacturers that also require removal of the racks before the self-clean cycle can start. In this case, one should take the racks out, clean them very well, and then put them in the oven at the highest temperature (usually 550°F) for 40 minutes. This procedure kashers the racks.

I don't use easy off. I vacuum out the oven and wash it down with fantastic. Really you don't need to clean it beforehand because any food residue get burnt.

My oven manual says not to put them in. I do as water girl posted. I take them out, run self clean, clean racks super well, then in oven on highest for an hour. You may want to ask your LOR but this is consistent with our family minhag in the pre-self cleaning days.

You need to ask your LOR about that. You may at least need to run a self-clean cycle.

No. It kills the finish. The grates are very hard to slide in and out of the shelf sides of oven after because the finish is not smooth anymore.
After I kasher the oven with self clean, I put the grates in the oven at the highest temperature to kasher them as per the conventional oven method of kashering. (So I guess my oven gets kashered twice at the end. Very Happy )

Malki2, I meant to say that you technically don't need to clean out the oven before running the self clean, any food residue gets burnt out while self cleaning.
