I am looking to get a few books for my nieces birthday. She is turning 4 and loves books.

Looking for well written and illustrated books.

TIA!

As far as topics go, she is interested in pretty much everything if the storyline is interesting or relatable enough. Also she cares about the pictures. So for example she liked the little engine that could but doesn’t like mike mulligan and the steam shovel because the pictures are ‘boring’

If this helps, she likes most Kevin Henkes

-Anna Dewdney's "Llama Llama" books are great! The original series, not the baby ones. The illustrations are amazing, especially the facial expressions. Some are "Llama Llama Misses Mama", "Llama Llama and the Bully Goat", "Llama Llama Gram and Grandpa", etc.

- A Shark in the Park

-Owl Babies

Dr. Seuss and Berenstain Bears, if she doesn't have them already. Judith Viorst. John Lithgow. Rosemary Wells (our hands-down favorite is 'Max's New Suit').
We also have a few board books of songs- 'The Wheels On The Bus' (Rafi/ Wickstrom), 'The Lady With The Alligator Purse' (Nadine Bernard Westcott), 'Hush Little Baby' - all with amazing illustrations that my kids are fascinated with.

Jewish books: all kids seem to love 'Is It Shabbos Yet?', Yossi and Laibel, and Mimmy and Simmy.
'Once Upon A Time' by Draizy Zelcer is a favorite of all my kids, and the pictures are really terrific.

The Elephant and Piggie books by Mo Willems are awesome and are funny to adults as well as kids. There are also not many words on each page, so it’s great for kids to just start reading.

My favorites in the series (that I bought for MY nieces) include:
Let’s Go for a Drive!
I Broke My Trunk!
Can I Play Too?
I Really Like Slop!

Really any book by Mo Willems is fun - Nanette’s Baguette, the Knuffle Bunny series... I don’t live the Pigeon books as much, they’re a bit more brash, I guess? Nothing truly rude, but if your kids are copycats or haven’t been exposed to light “backtalk” kind of humor, you may choose to avoid these.

My 4 1/2 year old loves the Elephant & Piggie books and the pigeon series books by Mo Willems. Curious George books are also good but stories are a little longer. The Llama Llama books are also really good.

Mouse Was Mad by Linda Urban

There are many lovely Judaica books, though the ones I'm thinking of might be better for turning 5 0r 6. Though one comes to mind, Around the Shabbos Table by Seryl Berman.

We love "what should Danny do?". It's one of those books with alternate endings based on the character's choices, and helps kids see the effect of their actions. Great illustrations, too.
