10 year old DS tripped and tore a small hole in the knee of his (new) pants. What's the best way to mend it?

Iron a patch behind it, on the inside.

And then stitch it down in the corners and the hole itself stitch to the patch all around and for extra, stitch another patch on top. It all depends on the size of the hole, it it's a rip or a hole.

Number 1: do not wash the pants because it will widen the hole
Number 2: turn inside out and iron until the hole is closed as much as possible
Number 3: iron a patch or a piece of interfacing on the inside if the pants covering a hole
Number 4: zigzag stich over the actual hole if possible. If not, then tack the interfacing down at the corners to keep from peeling up

Thank you. Is it a special type of patch - that sticks on when you iron it?

Yes. You can get it in the trimming store. I personally prefer interfacing. If you get the stretchy kind then it holds better
