Other thread inspired this, though I've been thinking about it for a long time.
Married almost 15 years and we have never gone on a vacation. 3 kids ages 5-11. Oldest wanted to know why we never go anywhere. Not even complaining, but seemed genuinely curious. Our families live nearby so we dont even go far to visit.
My kids do not go to camp, so I was thinking of planning a 2-3 day trip somewhere. Lancaster popped into my head but I'm open to anywhere. I want to go somewhere and not have to travel more than 20 minutes to a nearby attraction. We might uber. Not sure.
I don't need thrilling attractions, just a change of scenery. Even splashing in a creek would be fun.
Any ideas? Or suggestions on how to plan a trip? I tried TripAdvisor, but I didnt even know what to type in for a search! Would ideally like to spend no more than 500. But again, I'm clueless, so I dont even know if that's possible.

Lancaster is great for those ages, and with no expectations, they'll be thrilled with the change of scenery! The best attractions for those ages are Dutch Wonderland and Cherry Crest Farm, which together with 2 nights of a hotel will eat up most of your $500. You can also take an Amish Buggy Ride, visit Hershey factory tour (free), and take a train ride. I don't know how extensive Uber is in Lancaster, but I assume there's a local taxi service if not.

A little farther away, you could go to Lincoln, NH, where there's a summer minyan and many of the activities are free - beautiful walks in nature and splashing in creeks, etc. Your kids would also love Lost River (caves) and Clark's Trading Post.

A little closer is Onset (daily minyan not guaranteed in the summer, except bein hazmanim), where it's easy to find an empty beach to play on, and you can also a free tour of the kosher Cape Cod potato chip factory with samples at the end.

TripAdvisor can be overwhelming until you hone in on your destination, at which point it can be an invaluable resource. If you're choosing between 2-3 places, just Google "Lancaster PA TripAdvisor things to do" and look at the top 10 highest rated activities in each place to see if they excite you.

You can stay on a working farm where your kids can interact with the animals and do other farm related things depending on what farm you stay on. Some farms will have chickens and cows where your kids can pick their own eggs or learn how to milk cows, other farms have horses they can ride while other farms may have fishing or boating. You will have to do the research and ask your kids what they are interested in. Staying on a farm is good as your kids will be too occupied to think of doing anything else plus you can interact with the locals and learn about their culture (which is very interesting and similar to our culture).

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply! It makes me think that I can do this!
We do not need luxurious at all, but not into roughing it camping style. We just need clean.
I will look at the links and look into the options listed above after Shabbos. Thanks!

We stayed at Verdant View Farm in The Lancaster area, and it worked out great! We also stayed at Apple Pond Farm in the Catskills, which was a great experience for all. Both have a house that can be rented, and picnic table for barbecue suppers, etc. Kids can help with the farm chores, etc. We did go places in nearby, but the farm stay was the highlight of the trip.
