I am writing an article with the goal of helping parents gain the most possible from their children's therapy. Do you have any advice for parents? How can they make the most of their child's therapy, to best help the kids thrive?

Also, do you have advice for other therapists? How can they help families who have kids in the system?

You can PM me your answers, or you can answer here if you prefer.

I’m an SLP with a nice amount of experience. From what I’ve seen, in most cases, it’s a huge difference if the parents are involved in the therapy.
When parents are paying out of pocket, and/or accompanying the child to their sessions, they are by definition, more invested in the therapy. In a school setting, without a concerted effort for the parent to be on board, that child will usually see a slower rate of progress.
Also-and this is a big one- acknowledgement of success breeds more success. Try to find reasons to compliment the child’s progress. Pointing out the positive brings on significantly better results than pointing out the negative.

I have to agree with this. As an OT who works in a school, I treat a child 2 times a week for 30 minutes each session. That’s very little time to try to make significant changes. Of course the classrooms try to do as much carryover as they can...but it’s the parents who set the tone for the child’s therapy.
