Lately my Bosch mixer (that I got approx 4 years ago) stopped working. I brought it to someone locally who was recommended that fixes them. He checked it out and said it needs a new motor/ transmission and would cost $180 to fix. Anyone has any other ideas how to get this fixed?

Contact the manufacturer directly. Even if it’s out of warranty, they may still fix it or send a new one. You have nothing to lose by asking. I had a kitchen aid mixer out of warranty and kitchen aid replaced it twice (long story)!!!

Also, where did you buy the mixer? Some stores like Costco will take it back & replace it.
