With the first sound pronounced like the oo in foot. Is this the same as Aidel or Idel? And curious where it comes from.

To me, udel/oodel sounds like it comes from Yehudis. Kind of like you have Yudi, Hudi, and Yudel coming from Yehuda.

Yes! But aren't Aidel and Idel also the same? Adina in Hebrew? But Joyinthemorning raised an interesting idea.

You're right. Also FF. That's what my mother said, but I assumed she was mispronouncing TMI

I'm pretty certain though that my great grandmother was not named after the Bal shem tov's daughter.

Udel is a different name than Aide. I know people who have named after an Udel and call Adele. It is the same name, just a different pronunciation of the kamatz under the alef, based on the region that person came from. I don't know what it means.

Very interesting because Adele is also an English name, I never even thought about it being a Jewish name, assumed it was a translation. And if you look up the meaning of Adele in English, it's essentially the same definition as Aidel.

One of my names is Udel, after the baal shem's daughter.
It is pronounced w a soft u or oo depending on how chassidish one is.
It is not the same as aidel or idy or hudi.
It is the roshey taivos of the words "Aish dos lamo" acc to my father.

Hudi is short for Hudya, which is chassidish pronunciation of Hodaya.

And really nice about meaning of the name, btw.
