I have knotty hair. I can unknot with any brush. The technique is the key
Start at the bottom and slowly untangle. And work your way up slowly.
Never go from the scalp down. You will end up knotting it worse!
It also helps to divide hair into sections. Side and top / bottom .... The less hair in the bunch the easier to detangle.

I never use a brush on knotty hair, only a wide toothed comb.

The Wet Brush is the best brush for tangled hair.
You can also try a detangling spray.

Wet brush or similar. I also put water and bit if conditioner into a spray bottle and shpritz.

I make the wet brush really wet. It works for my kid with long knotty hair.

Slather with conditioner and use a wide-tooth comb. Beauty mags all say not to comb/brush wet hair, but if I don't, it will dry in one solid piece. Comb while wet and brush, if needed, when dry.
