Need help with Baking: Baking Powder

I don't bake extremely often, so I don't go through my baking powder too fast.

My cakes are coming out dense and not light and fluffy.

I think it may be that my baking powder is no longer fresh, even though I keep them in an oxo container.

Is there a way to figure out before I bake if my baking powder is fresh, like the way we proof yeast?

What else could I be doing wrong?!

I'm at a loss!!!!
