I went to a bris last night and someone went around to the women's section with a candelabra having people light a candle. I believe they said a bracha before lighting. This was a sefard family. Anyone know this minhag?

Yes it’s a Tradition from Aleppo Syria. We light for Eliyahu Hanavi. We don’t say a Bracha . We put tzedakah into the tray and pray our personal request that in the zechut that we gave tzedakah and light a candle leluy nishmat Eliyahu Hanavi cuz he comes to a Brit that he should pray on our behalf and answer our personal prayers.

In Arabic It’s called seneeyet Eliyahu Hanavi . Tray of Eliyahu.

Before the Milah starts We bid the coins on the tray to the crowd. The highest bid takes the $ as a segulah and the money from the bidder is donated to a Kollel or Shul that the Baal Simcha requests .

I'm sephardic and I've never seen this or heard of this at a bris, although the night before the bris, at what we call the brit yitzchak, we do have one candle lit on a tray and collect tzedaka around it (no bracha is made).

We light mishnayos candles at a Bris. I’ve never seen anyone else do it.
We light 13 tall candles before the Bris and blow them out after.
Then the first time the boy learns Torah ba’al peh (mishnayos) we make a small seuda and relight the candles until they burn out fully.

There are Sephardic Syrian Satmar ppl.
They would do the tray of Eliyahu Hanavi
BTW, I think it’s only a Syrian minhag

Thanks! I was wondering. That makes sense because they are most likely Syrian Sefardim because most of the sefardim from here are.
