Can I give my 8 month old a few ounces of water if he’s thirsty?

Sure! My baby loves water. Been giving it at meals since he's probably 6 months old.

I was told that you give water to accompany solids, whenever you start that.

At six months it's safe to give water, but not too much.

Water is fine from 6 months but only 2-3 ounces a day. Newborns should definitely not be drinking anything except breastmilk or formula!

If you nurse then there's no need to give water before starting solida. If you give formula, you should give water starting from newborn because formula constipates. Doesn't have to be much, 4 oz a day spread apart between feedings is usually ok.

It’s a problem because it’s zero calorie, and filling.

A newborn's kidneys can't handle water.

Once baby is eating solids my doctor says don't worry about giving too much water. I imagine your 8 month old is at least trying solids and nibbles here and there so water would be fine and with this heat necessary.

I've always given sugar water, gripe water, and tea for constipated newborns, as do many mom's I know. I've never had any issues.
I give water when we're out on a hot day. Of course to much is not ok, but a little bit is fine.

Please do not give your newborns water that is very dangerous! Most babies are ok with water when they start solids, but they shouldn't have large amounts at a time.

I give my newborns glucose water on very hot summer days. They are thirsty just like you!
Other than that, it's not Good for baby as they should be having formula or breast milk.
Older babies who eat solids can have water.

Small infants can have water intoxication. There was a story I saw maybe a year ago (?) where the parents were watering down the formula to make it last longer because they didn't have money, and the child died due to too much water / electrolyte imbalance. If a small infant is out in the sun, give them formula or breastmilk for fluids.

My pediatrician says to give sugar water or tea from day one for a gasy baby. 1-2 Oz won't harm him. The kimpeturin homes all have glucose water and tea readily available when needed.

They give sugar water in the hospital to help with baby nursing, but at the same time its a big no no for newborns to drink plain water so I think there's a big difference, though not sure what.
