How much goes into the upkeep of a bonsai? Is it a hobby worth getting into, or is it too much for someone with a busy schedule?

Just clip it occasionally. Don't be scared off by the enthusiasts

It could depend on what you choose. Ask for something low maintenance.
I got a bonsai olive tree around a year ago from Ikea for 25 Shekel(!), and I did repot it in a slightly bigger pot but other than watering it every few days -that’s it! It could be because it’s a hardy tree, native to Israel that it doesn’t need much care. See if you could find something parallel to that.
