I was exposed to cooking from a younge age and luckily was always pretty good with it, However- I truly think it helped to have such positive kitchen experiences. When my family let me cook with them, it was such a treat. I loved it and had so much fun, so there was less pressure about the outcome. As I grew older my palate became more refined and I educated myself on different types of cuisine, but because I was in it to have fun and try something new, id taste along the way and make adjustments, that seemed good to me. If it wasnt "perfect" first time id play with a recipe till it came out best. So I feel like best advice is for family and hosting you may want to stick to easy and classic recipes (which p.s. a lot of people are happier with because they are used to it) and when you have the chance to experiment, find something you think isnt too difficult and give yourself the chance to have some fun in the kitchen , even get the kids involved. Youll see, even its not amazing they will be inclined to eat something they made. As for forgetting about food and overcooking it- timers are your friends. Also, id tackle cooking before baking personally, baking is a lot more exact.
Good luck!
