Midwest climate- when do you turn the heat on

At what temperature do you turn the heat on?

When nighttime temps get to fiftyish.
Sometimes though, we've put the a/c on during the day, especially when the oven and a few burners are all on.

Just for fun, I looked at the Midwest on Wikipedia to see which states are part of it, and then looked at weather forecasts on Google for cities near the north and south of the midwest, in Bismarck, ND the minimum today is 32F and in in Kennett, MO it's 56F. Picking somewhere more in the middle, Des Moines, IA's minimum today is 42F.

Yeah, I know, I probably have something more useful I could be doing ...

Where did Midwest as a term come from? Colonial times?
Because the real midwest of the western third of the US is... Denver?
