I am B"H getting re-married and our Vort is iy"H this weekend.

I'm looking for tips/info about breaking the plate:

1. What type to use?
2. Does one wrap it up?
3. How do we ensure it actually breaks?

TIA

Mazal tov.
I would wrap it up, for safety. You don't want little pieces to go flying.

Also to make sure it will break, get a cheap plate that's not too heavy and won't take a kit of force to break

Interesting...
I never heard of breaking a plate at the vort. That happens at the wedding just before "badeken" in nt experience.

When a friend once asked me go help with this, I brought the ugliest plate I could find - in my opinion it deserved to be broken! And since it was wrapped to prevent any injuries from flying g fragments, it didn't matter what it looked like.

One woman I know brought a new set of china after about twenty years of marriage, and saved the remnants of the first to break at her children's engagements. As she said, they had broken enough of it as children, so now they could break the rest for a good reason.

I've heard of people choosing a nicely patterned fragment and having it set as a pendant for the kallah, as a memento of the event. I don't know how this works practically, though.

Put the plate in a sealed bag (so the pieces stayin place without flying off)
then wrap it jn something pretty (ive seen mostly an embroided white napkin)

And to make sure it breaks - don't just drop it; throw it really hard into the floor.

The more layers of wrapping you use, the more the impact is cushioned, so you need to compensate for that by using extra force. And try to do it on a hard floor, not carpet.

First of all Mazel Tov.
My advice is use a thinner wrapped up plate.
I took along a thick plate for my daughter's Tenoim,it took at least two attempts to break it and I got a nasty cut in the process.
I wish you and your Chasan a wonderful Vort.

Buy or borrow a nice hefty Baal-melochadik hammer, not a dinky little 99-cent-shop hammer. Wrap the whole thing including the head in ribbon in color/s of your choice, or spray-paint. Ribbon looks nicer. Place thin plate, wrapped in heavy cloth, on sturdy table. Grasp hammer. Take deep breath, raise arms high and bring down hard and fast like you mean it. Mazal tov!

I've seen people break it on a foil-wrapped brick.

Mazel Tov!!! I'm so happy for you. May you and your chassan be zoche to a bayis neeman b'yisroel and many years of good health and happiness together.

Mazal tov!
From what I see in Israel, people wrap the plate in saran wrap. It is very common to use a costum decorated plate. The plate is usually knocked over a chair to break it.
The minhag is to break a plate at the tenaim, in America I think the tenaim are made at the wedding. In Israel, the tenaim are made at the vort (that's the meaning of the vort).
